What to Avoid Before and After Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers can create subtle volume, smooth contours, and restore facial balance, but what you do before and after your appointment has an impact on your outcomes. Knowing what to avoid can help your skin settle more comfortably and reduce common concerns like bruising, swelling, and irritation.

The filler experience at PBinJect Medical Spa in Wakefield, MA, is intentionally refined, calm, and modern. With extensive and diverse clinical nursing backgrounds, Paige Balley, BSN, RNKimberly Dias, NP-C, and Laura Lima, ANCP-BC, provide expert care while prioritizing safety and precision.

What to Avoid Before Fillers

Before your filler session, it’s smart to avoid anything that may raise your chance of bruising or swelling, including:

  • Alcohol (this is one of the most important)
  • Aspirin
  • Ibuprofen
  • Fish oil
  • Vitamin E

Don’t stop any prescribed medication unless your medical provider tells you to. When in doubt, bring a list of what you take so your injector can guide you.

It’s also best to arrive with a clean face and avoid heavy makeup right before the appointment. If you have an active cold sore, rash, infection, or irritation near the treatment area, your visit might need to be rescheduled.

What to Avoid After Fillers

After receiving dermal fillers, give your skin time to calm down. Don’t touch, rub, or massage the treated areas unless your injector specifically tells you to. Pressure can interfere with how the product settles, especially in delicate areas.

For the first 24 hours, it’s also helpful to skip strenuous exercise, alcohol, saunas, hot tubs, and excessive heat. These can increase swelling or bruising. You may want to sleep with your head slightly elevated the first night to help reduce puffiness.

Makeup is usually best avoided for about 24 hours post-treatment, since the skin will have small injection points that need time to close.
